The Earth Science Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences presents the Bohuslav Cambel Medal in an effort to appreciate:
- Outstanding scientific contributions to research in geosciences
- Promotion of development of geosciences at the Earth Science Institute, Slovak Academy of Sciences
Bohuslav Cambel (1919 – 2006) was the director of the Geological Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, and of the former Geological Laboratory, in 1963-1989. He transformed the Geological Laboratory into the prestigious Geological Institute using human resources, supporting young researchers, establishing modern analytical laboratories, and forcing innovative methods of research. He established the workplace in Banská Bystrica in order to develop geology of mineral deposits.
